Why do we have to keep our hands off of grace?

Scripture says that if it is to be of grace, we must keep our hands off of it and let it be totally the unmerited favor of God on our behalf. Grace cannot be mixed with human effort; the promise is sure to all the seed by faith.

Les explains that most people are totally ignorant of the eternity to come, never considering that after this life ends, whether ten or eighty or a hundred years, there is an eternity in God's presence or out of His presence. He then points out that Scripture says if it is going to be of grace, we have to keep our hands off of it and let it be totally the unmerited favor of God on our behalf—that is grace. Les connects this to verse 16, where the promise is sure to all the seed, not only to those of the law but also to those of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all in the spiritual realm. Abraham was the first to walk by faith without law and without circumcision, coming out of abject idolatry, and that is where we have to come from. So we keep our hands off grace so that it remains unmerited favor and the promise remains sure by faith.
