Why do some people think grace is a license to sin?

Some think grace is a license to sin because when grace is proclaimed as greater than all sin and free, they conclude that being under grace removes all law and demands, so they can do as they please and God's grace will cover it. Scripture calls this a slanderous accusation, and grace is not license.

Les explains that if you tell a curiosity seeker that the grace of God is greater than all our sin, that we are not under any demands of the law, and that we live under grace, they may shake their head and ask whether that means you can do whatever you want and God's grace will take care of it. He says he has never taught that and has told his classes for 20 some years that grace is not license. Grace does not give us freedom to do as we please; it simply changes our appetites and motives. Paul faced the same charge in Romans 3:7-8, where he was slanderously reported and falsely accused of saying, "Let us do evil that good may come." Their condemnation is just. Paul then shows Jew and Gentile are all under sin and in need of grace.
