What does Ephesians 2:5 mean when it says we are made alive together with Christ?
Scripture teaches that even when we were dead in sins, God quickened us—made us alive—together with Christ. God crucified the old Adam, reckoned us as in the tomb, and then quickened us with resurrection power, not leaving us dead any more than He left Christ. This is received by faith.
Les explains that Ephesians 2:5 is a natural follow-up to Ephesians 2:1. He teaches that “quickened” means “made alive.” Why did He have to make us alive? Because He crucified us—He put old Adam to death on the cross and reckoned us as in the tomb. But He could not leave us there any more than He could leave Christ in the tomb; our faith would be for nothing had He not risen from the dead. Yet He did not leave us there either. He quickened us, made us alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. We were under old Adam and could not help ourselves, but God broke that power by crucifying the old Adam, reckoning it as dead, and then quickening us with resurrection power. So verse 5 says, “Even when we were dead in sins, He hath quickened us together with Christ.” Les stresses this is all a matter of faith—we cannot comprehend it except through the eyes of faith. When He died, we died; when He lay in the tomb, God saw us in the tomb, dead to the old life, ready for resurrection to the new. Les asks, “See how plain that all is? Do you believe it?”
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
