What does Les think about spending so much money on beautiful church buildings?
He is appalled at the money poured into beautiful church buildings, where people sit for thirty to sixty minutes, are entertained, then forget it all week. He does not believe God is pleased, contrasting such sumptuousness with poor Indian pastors who exist on almost nothing to spread the Gospel.
Les explains that an Indian missionary decried the wealth of the Christian community in America compared to the abject poverty of Christians in India, and Les could see his point. The missionary visited a huge church in one of our great cities and was appalled at the sumptuousness of the whole setup; Les is too. Whenever Les goes into some of these places, he is appalled at the money being poured into beautiful buildings where someone can come in, sit for thirty or forty minutes, maybe an hour, enjoy, be entertained, and then go home and forget about it for a week. Les does not think God is pleased. He contrasts this with poor Indian pastors who exist on almost nothing just for the sake of getting the Gospel to towns and villages. Believers are to set their affection not on things on the earth but on things above.
