What is salvation based on according to Paul in Romans?

According to Paul in Romans, salvation is based totally upon faith in the Gospel—what God has said concerning the finished work of the cross. It is not based on repentance, baptism, church membership, tithing, good works, or any other requirement people assume. Those things belong after salvation, but they are not its basis.

Les explains that the passage does not say salvation comes by repenting, being baptized, joining the church, giving ten percent of income, doing good works, and believing. Many people automatically think such things are requirements for salvation, but they are not. They are all right in their rightful place after salvation, but as far as salvation is concerned, it is based totally upon faith in the Gospel, in what God has said concerning the finished work of the cross. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, and in it the righteousness of God is revealed, which Paul called revelation.

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
