Why did Jesus delay going to Lazarus when he was sick?

Jesus purposely delayed responding to Mary and Martha's message so that Lazarus would die. This allowed Him to return and raise Lazarus from the dead, fulfilling God's sovereign purpose. The delay was intentional, demonstrating that God does everything with a purpose.

Les explains that the sovereign God does everything with a purpose. He illustrates this with the lame man at the temple gate: the Lord passed him for three years but did not heal him. Similarly, when Lazarus was sick and Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus, Jesus purposely delayed responding so that Lazarus would die. Then He could go back and raise him from the dead, showing God's intentional plan.
