What was the 'escape route' Peter used for Israel in Acts 3?

Peter's escape route for Israel was the truth that they crucified the Messiah in ignorance. Because they did not know, God could extend mercy and restore the nation. Though Israel was guilty and rejected Him, God's mercy will return to the nation.

Les explains that in Acts chapter 3, Peter uses the fact that the Jewish leaders and Rome did not know who Jesus was as an escape route for Israel. Paul had written to the Corinthians that none of the princes of this world knew the hidden wisdom, for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Peter applies this same truth: though Israel was guilty of putting their Messiah to death and rejected Him, their ignorance opened the way for God's mercy to come back on the nation, even though they suffer to this day.
