Les Feldick Bible Study

Is a wife subject to her husband as to a king?

No. The wife is not subject to her husband as to a king. She submits to his headship, not to kingly rule. The comparison is to Christ as head of the body, not as King of the church. Paul consistently presents headship and connection, not subjects kowtowing to commands.

Les explains that it is not scripturally correct to refer to Christ as our King. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords, but to the church He is the head of the body. If He were our King, then believers would be subjects, yet Paul never gives the illusion that we are subjects who must kowtow to His every command. We are part of Him, just as the wife is part of the husband. In the same way, Scripture does not teach that a wife is the subject of a husband king. She submits to his headship, but not as a king. Christ is connected to us as members of His body, just as the physical head is connected to the physical body and the husband is connected to the wife.
