How is Christ connected to believers in the body of Christ?
Christ is connected to believers as the head is connected to the body and as a husband is connected to his wife. Believers are members of His body, part of Him, not subjects under a king. He is the head of the body, not the King of the church.
Les explains that it is not scripturally correct to call Christ the King of the church, though He is King of kings, Lord of lords, and God of creation. To the church, He is the head of the body. If He were King, believers would be subjects, but Paul never presents believers as subjects who must kowtow to His every command. Instead, believers are part of Him, just like a wife is part of her husband. A wife submits to her husband's headship, but not as to a king. Les notes that Paul constantly refers to Christ as the head of the body, and he invites anyone to show where Paul teaches Christ is King of the church. As the physical head is connected to the physical body, and as a husband is connected to his wife, so Christ is connected to believers as members of the body of Christ.
