Why did Jesus stop reading Isaiah in the middle of the verse?
Jesus stopped reading Isaiah mid-verse because the last part of that prophecy had not yet been fulfilled. He could truthfully say only the portion He read was fulfilled that day, and He knew exactly where to stop. Reading further would have proclaimed something not yet accomplished.
Les explains that Jesus read from Isaiah and then said, "This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears." He asks whether Jesus could have said that if He had read the whole verse, and answers no, because the last part of that verse in Isaiah has not been fulfilled yet. Therefore Jesus knew exactly where to stop. The context also points to a similar stopping point in Acts: He could have stopped at Samaria, because that is where it did stop, since the Jewish disciples never went to the ends of the earth with the Gospel of the Kingdom because the nation was rejecting it.
What did Jesus do when he read from Isaiah in the temple?
Reading in the temple from Isaiah, He stopped in the middle of the verse, sat down, and declared that the Scripture was fulfilled that day. He did not continue reading the rest of the verse, stopping exactly where the prophetic program required.
Why did Jesus stop reading the Isaiah verse at that point instead of finishing the verse?
Jesus stopped there because the remainder of the Isaiah verse had not yet been fulfilled. Only the portion He read was being fulfilled in the hearers' ears that day, so He could not finish it. He knew exactly where to stop, ending at the point where fulfilled Scripture gave way to future fulfillment.
