What did God promise David about his house, kingdom, and throne?

God promised David that David’s house, David’s kingdom, and David’s throne would be established forever. The fulfillment is not in David or Solomon personally, since both died, but in the Messiah, the Eternal Son of God, who would come to be King over that kingdom.

Les teaches from this passage that God looked down through the corridors of time and declared that David’s house, the kingdom that began with David, and David’s throne would be established forever (s307–s312). He explains that this did not mean David would live forever, because David died and was buried, and Solomon reigned 40 years, died, and was buried (s313–s317). The “forever” aspect refers to the Messiah, the Eternal Son of God, who would come to be King over this kingdom (s318–s321). The surrounding context also notes that God’s mercy would not depart, unlike Saul, whom He put away (s300–s306).

2 Samuel 7:16

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
