How did Jesus respond to Satan's temptation to turn stones into bread?

Jesus answered Satan by appealing to Scripture, declaring, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” He did not yield to the fleshly desire for food but confronted temptation with the written Word, setting the pattern of relying on Scripture to resist the evil one.

Les explains that Satan targeted Christ in His hunger, attacking the fleshly desire for something to eat by mentioning bread. Though Christ is God, He is also man, and He never lets the one interfere with the other. Jesus responded in verse 4 with “It is written,” going back to the Word. He quoted Scripture: man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Les applies this to believers today: to maintain guard against the evil one, we must stay in the Book, and we are washed by the cleansing of the Word. Jesus confronted Satan by quoting Scripture.
