Why is the old planet going to be removed?
The old planet is going to be removed because it has been plagued with the curse for 7,000 years. Even the thousand-year reign was relatively without it, but at the end, when Satan was released again, the curse remained. So Scripture presents a new heaven and a new earth.
Les explains that after the thousand years and the end of time as we understand time, we are getting ready for the eternal state. He says eternity will not be spent just floating around on a cloud, but will be in light of the Old Testament promises that the kingdom is forever and Christ will rule on the throne of David forever. But since the old planet has been plagued with the curse for 7,000 years—even though the thousand years was relatively without it, it still had the curse at the end when Satan was released again—the old planet is evidently going to be removed. John then sees a new heaven and a new earth in Revelation 21:1, after the unbelievers are in the lake of fire for their eternal doom. This raises the question of what happened to the old one, and Les points to Scripture, turning to Peter's epistle for the answer.
