What would have happened if Christ had ministered in Sodom and Gomorrah like he did in Capernaum?
Scripture teaches that if Christ had gone into Sodom and Gomorrah and performed the miracles and presented God in the flesh as He did in Capernaum, those cities would have repented in sackcloth and ashes and returned to God. Capernaum did not, so Sodom and Gomorrah will be more tolerable in judgment.
Les explains that Jesus, during His earthly ministry in Galilee, especially in Capernaum, pronounced woe on Capernaum and said it would be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the judgment day. He said if Sodom and Gomorrah had witnessed what Capernaum witnessed, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes. Les clarifies the meaning: if Christ had gone into Sodom and Gomorrah and performed miracles and presented God in the flesh as Capernaum had Him, God says Sodom and Gomorrah would have returned to Himself, but Capernaum did not. Jesus also gave Tyre and Sidon as another example: they would have repented, wicked as they were, but Israel did not repent even though the Messiah was in their midst. This truth supports degrees of punishment at the Great White Throne, where the lost are sent to their doom in the lake of fire, which is not hell.
