Why would Sodom and Gomorrah have repented if they had seen Jesus' works?
They would have repented because, as Gentiles, they were ready to believe simply by hearing and did not require a sign. Jesus' miracles were given to prove to Israel who He was, but Gentiles would have accepted His works without demanding further signs.
Les explains that Christ performed all those miracles in His earthly ministry to prove to Israel who He was. He illustrates the difference in mindset between Jews and Gentiles: Jesus told the citizens of Capernaum that if the people of Sodom and Gomorrah had witnessed what they witnessed, they would have repented in sackcloth and lashes. Why? Because they wouldn't have had to say, "show us a sign." They were Gentiles, ready to believe it upon hearing it. But the Jews required a sign. Later, in Acts 15, Paul and Barnabas rehearsed the miraculous signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles, and that convinced the Jews.
And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
