Where does an unbeliever's soul go immediately at death?
At death, an unbeliever's soul goes immediately to the place of torment. The Old Testament indicates that hell, the place of torment, was enlarged after paradise was removed, and today the unbeliever still goes directly there to await the resurrection of the unjust and final judgment.
Les explains that when a person dies today, the unbeliever still goes immediately to the place of torment. This is hell, which the Old Testament says was enlarged after paradise was removed from the innermost parts of the earth. Believers, by contrast, go immediately up into the presence of the Lord, where paradise is now located. The unbeliever remains in that place of torment until the resurrection of the unjust, when they are brought bodily before the great white throne. There Christ will be judge rather than Savior, and they will face degrees of punishment, as Jesus illustrated with Capernaum and Sodom and Gomorrah.
