According to Genesis 1:30, what did God give animals to eat?

Genesis 1:30 states that to every beast of the earth, every fowl of the air, and everything that creeps upon the earth wherein there is life, God gave every green herb for food. This originally vegetarian diet included all animals, and the verse concludes that it was so.

Les explains that Genesis 1:30 follows God's instructions to Adam and Eve in verses 28-29. In verse 30, God extends the same plant-based provision to every beast of the earth, including lions and tigers, to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creeps upon the earth wherein there is life. He gave them every green herb for food, and it was so. Les connects this to the coming kingdom, when carnivorous animals will revert to eating grass, as Isaiah foretold, matching the pre-curse economy before Adam sinned.

Genesis 1:30

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
