What did God originally give human beings to eat?

God originally gave humanity every herb bearing seed upon the face of all the earth and every tree whose fruit yields seed. In Genesis 1:29, He said these were to be for food. The King James term “meat” there means food, not animal flesh, so the original human diet was plant-based.

Les teaches that Genesis 1:29 records God speaking to Adam and Eve and giving them every herb bearing seed and every tree yielding seed as food. He points out that the King James word “meat” should be understood as “food.” In verse 30, God likewise gave every green herb for food to the beasts, the fowl, and everything that creeps upon the earth. This original economy before the curse was plant-based, and Isaiah’s coming kingdom will revert to that same diet, with wild, carnivorous animals eating grass as cattle do.

Genesis 1:29

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
