Is the human soul immortal or is only the body immortal?
Scripture teaches that the human soul or spirit is immortal, while the body is not. When God breathed into man the breath of life, man became a living soul, distinguishing him from other life. The lost also continue forever, resurrected to separation from God, called the second death, not annihilation.
Les explains that resurrection is not just being brought back to life to die again, but God's unique, sovereign act of bringing back from the dead a human being to a life of eternity. He stresses that when God breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life, man became a living soul, separating him from all other categories of life, because man is immortal in the area of the soul. The body is not immortal, but the soul or spirit is, and those two are so closely connected that they are almost used together. Revelation speaks of the resurrection of the just to a life of immortality in God's presence. The lost will be resurrected to a life separated from God, or the second death, but they will still continue through all eternity. Les notes that some groups teach the lost are annihilated when they die, but that does not line up with Scripture; they will suffer and experience regret and feeling throughout all the eons of eternity. Christ was the first person to experience resurrection, and that is why He is called the first fruits, plural, of them that slept.
