What does John 1:1 say about the Word in the beginning?

John 1:1 declares that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This identifies the Word as God the Son, who later was made flesh, dwelt among us, and was full of grace and truth.

Les explains that John 1:1 presents the Word existing in the beginning, with God, and as God. He ties this back to Genesis 1:1, where in the beginning God called heaven and earth out of nothing. Les then points to John 1:14, where the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Since the Father and the Spirit never became flesh, this must be God the Son, Christ, full of grace and truth. He also connects this to Colossians 1, where Paul writes of the Son and redemption through His blood.

Why does John 1:1 say 'in the beginning' rather than giving a date?

When John opens his Gospel, he deliberately uses the exact phrase 'in the beginning' that Moses used, not a date like '20 million years ago' or '10,000 years ago.'
