What was the Word's relationship to God in John 1:1?

John 1:1 teaches that the Word was with God and the Word was God. The context identifies the Word as God the Son, Christ, who was made flesh and dwelt among us. So the Word was with God while also being God, not the Father or the Spirit.

Les explains that John 1:1's statement that the Word was with God and was God points to the Son, not the Father or the Spirit. He notes that if you doubt this is speaking concerning the Son, John 1:14 is the clincher: “the Word was made flesh.” Since God the Father and God the Spirit never became flesh, the One made flesh is God the Son, Christ. He dwelt among us, and they beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Les also connects this back to Genesis 1:1, where in the beginning God called heaven and earth out of nothing, and to John's words that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
