Why is Jesus called the Word in John 1:1?
Jesus is called the Word because the term Word implies communication, and He is the person of the Godhead—God the Son—who communicates. He was with God and was God, and all things were made by Him. As the Word, He spoke the power of creation.
Les teaches that John 1:1 presents the Word as being with God and being God, showing the triune Godhead was complete and in absolute consensus. The Word is the communicator within the Godhead, the person who would communicate with whatever creation was called out of. Since language exists to communicate, the title Word implies communication. All things were made by Him—by the Word—and the Word spoke the power of creation. Les also connects this to Hebrews, where it is the Word, the Son of God, Christ, who has spoken. Thus the Word is the very person of the Godhead who is the communicator, God the Son.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
