What causes the sun to turn black and the moon to look like blood in Revelation 6?

The sixth seal in Revelation 6 brings a great earthquake; earthquakes and probably volcanoes cause cataclysmic pollution in the air, which turns the moon red as blood and blackens out the sun. This scene is placed at the midpoint of the tribulation.
