Why must we be careful about tradition in light of Scripture?
Tradition must be handled carefully because Scripture condemns being hidebound by it; believers can become locked into traditions that are not in line with Scripture. The right approach is to open the Bible and see what it truly says, letting Scripture, not inherited custom, shape belief and practice.
Les teaches that many people are hidebound by tradition, and he notes that if any word in Scripture is condemned, it is tradition. Therefore, he warns against becoming locked into a tradition that is not necessarily in line with the Scriptures. His stated attempt is not to twist people’s arms or grind an axe, but to open the Scriptures and help folks see what they really say, including how the Bible is gloriously and supernaturally put together so that human hands could not have done it.
