What were Jewish people intended to become?
The Jewish people were intended to become a nation of priests, as promised in Exodus 19. Every Jew was to be a priest of God, serving as a go-between between man and God, to bring pagan Gentiles to a knowledge of their God.
Les explains that God intended Israel to be a nation of priests who would serve as mediators between Himself and the pagan Gentiles. This was promised clear back in Exodus 19, when God brought Israel out of Egypt and made them His covenanted people. If they were obedient, they would be what He wanted them to be—a nation of priests. Every Jew was intended at some future day to become a priest of God to bring all these pagan Gentiles to a knowledge of their God. A priest is a go-between between man and God. Les notes this was part of the timeline of Old Testament prophecy, where Israel could have been the priests they were promised to be, and Christ could have set up His kingdom, but this is hypothetical because it didn't happen.
