Why did a 1960s university professor propose putting fundamental Christians in insane asylums?

A university professor, thought to be at the University of Minnesota in the 1960s, advocated that if fundamental Christendom stood in the way of social progress, one way to reduce their influence would be to commit them to insane asylums, because he claimed they were not mentally fit for society.

Les explains that Christian students feel pressure in the university environment, as though believing these things makes them some kind of nut. He then recounts reading an article by a university professor, thought to be at the University of Minnesota and probably back in the 1960s, who advocated that if fundamental Christendom stands in the way of social progress, one way to reduce their influence would be to commit them to insane asylums because, after all, they are not mentally fit for society. Les compares this to Hitler and Stalin, who did that, and warns that people in America are now advocating the same thing, saying it is not that far away. He adds that he is not a prophet of doom and gloom, but sometimes believers must be made aware of what they are up against.
