How does a believer experience the cleansing effect of the Word?

A believer experiences the cleansing effect of the Word by literally inundating themselves with Scripture. Ephesians 5:26 describes being sanctified and cleansed with the washing of water by the Word—not baptismal water. As the Word is taken in abundantly, it produces a cleansing effect in the believer's life.

Les teaches that the believer is cleansed not by baptismal water but by the Word. He points to Ephesians 5:26, where Paul writes to Gentile believers, members of the body of Christ, that the Lord Jesus might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word. Les explains that this is how we are cleansed: we just literally inundate ourselves with the Word, and it has a cleansing effect. He connects this to Joshua, where the book of the law was not to depart out of their mouth but they were to meditate therein day and night. Although that was the Old Testament format, with material blessing for obedience and loss of blessing for disobedience, the lesson for believers is that if we are going to be pleasing in God's eyes, we must spend a good share of our time in the Book.
