Why do false teachers follow the error of Balaam?

They follow the error of Balaam for reward, running greedily after it. Balaam sought to move Israel from her separated position with Jehovah into open sin so God would curse them. False teachers likewise deny the Lord, turn grace into lasciviousness, and speak evil of things they know not.

Les explains that Jude describes false teachers who creep into a local church unawares. God knew before the world was created that they would do this, and they are ordained of old to condemnation. They are ungodly men who turn the grace of God into lasciviousness and deny the only Lord God, our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude then shows how they operate: they speak evil of things they know not, they have gone in the way of Cain, and they have run greedily after the error of Balaam for reward. They also perish in the gainsaying of Korah. Les points out that Balaam's error was thinking that if he could get Israel to lose her separated position with Jehovah and get them to sin openly, God would have to curse and annihilate them. That same deceptive, greedy, destructive pattern marks false teachers.
