What does Jehovah-Nissi mean and why is God called that?

Jehovah-Nissi means 'our banner.' God is called that because of Israel's first war after leaving Egypt against the Amalekites. When Moses held his hands up, Israel prevailed; when his arms grew tired and fell, Israel began to lose. Because Jehovah won the battle, the name was coined.

Les explains that Jehovah-Nissi means 'our banner,' and it goes back to Israel's first war after coming out of Egypt, when they ran up against the Amalekites. When Moses held his hands up, the battle would go for Israel; when he got tired and his hands fell down, Israel would start getting whooped. But his arms were held up, and they won the battle. As a result, the name Jehovah was coined Jehovah-Nissi, because it was Jehovah who won the battle. Les adds these names of deity were intrinsic with God's dealing with Israel.
