What is the requirement for anyone who wants to serve God today?
The requirement for serving God today is coming to the place where one recognizes that in ourselves we are nothing. No worldly education, talents, or inheritance can be brought into His service, for God cannot use those. Like Moses and Paul, a servant must begin as a nobody.
Les explains that God sovereignly prepared Moses by sending him to be a sheepherder for 40 years in the wilderness, where he had almost no contact with the public or people of stature. In his own eyes Moses was nothing, a nobody, but in God's eyes he was everything. That, Les says, is the requirement for service even today. Paul refers to it in Corinthians. If you want to be a Sunday school teacher, a missionary, or anything in God's service, the first place you have to come is to understand that in ourselves we are nothing. You can bring nothing of this world's education, talents, or inheritance, because God cannot use any of that. Moses had to come to that place. Paul, educated at the feet of Gamaliel, also had to understand that as a servant of God's grace, especially to the Gentiles, he had to begin as a nobody. In 1 Corinthians 2 Paul says he came not with excellency of speech, not as a smooth orator or an Apollos, and not with wisdom declaring the testimony of God, but he determined not to know anything except Jesus Christ and him crucified, and he was with them in weakness and fear.
