How did Paul's education at Gamaliel's feet relate to his service as a servant of God's grace?
Paul’s training at Gamaliel’s feet did not make him usable; he had to learn that in himself he was nothing. As a servant of God’s grace to the Gentiles, he began as a nobody, preaching Christ crucified without excellency of speech, wisdom, or human talent, and came in weakness and fear.
Les explains that God’s requirement for service is to become nothing in our own eyes, as Moses did and as Paul was brought. Although Paul was educated at the feet of Gamaliel, he had to understand that when it came to being a servant of God’s grace, especially to the Gentiles, he had to begin as a nobody. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2 that he did not come with excellency of speech or wisdom, and he was not an Apollos. Instead, he determined not to know anything among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and he was with them in weakness and fear. This shows that worldly education, talents, and inheritance cannot be the basis for God’s service.
