Where was Moses leading Israel in Numbers 22?

In Numbers 22, Moses was leading Israel around to the southeast of Canaan, passing through the land of Moab, so they could approach Canaan from the east side of the Jordan River, opposite the Dead Sea. They had ended their forty years of wilderness wanderings.

Les explains that by Numbers 22, Israel had ended their forty years of wilderness wanderings, and Moses was leading them around to the southeast of Canaan through the land of Moab. This route allowed them to enter from the east side of the Jordan River, opposite the Dead Sea. As they came across Moab, the king of Moab became as shook up as the pharaohs had been, and he sent for the false prophet Balaam. Moab said this company of Israelites would lick up all around them like an ox licks up grass. Balaam was told that a people had come out from Egypt and covered the face of the earth. Later, the king of Moab took Balaam up into a high mountain and said he could not see the end of them; they went beyond the horizon. This indicated several million people, not a few thousand.
