Les Feldick Bible Study

What was the relationship between the new king of Egypt and Joseph?

The new king of Egypt did not know Joseph and had nothing to do with the agreements the earlier pharaohs had made with Joseph and his offspring. Unlike the previous line of pharaohs who were friendly to the Israelites, this new ruler had no relationship with Joseph and did not honor his legacy.

Les explains that the pharaohs on Egypt’s throne from Joseph’s time and while Jacob brought his children into Goshen were friendly with the Israelites and got along fine. But a new line of pharaohs arose who did not know Joseph and had nothing to do with the agreements the old pharaohs had made with Joseph and his offspring. This new pharaoh said the children of Israel were more and mightier than the Egyptians, and he feared they might join enemies in war, so he planned to deal wisely with them and get them out of the land.

Exodus 1:8
