What did God promise Jacob about going down to Egypt?

God told Jacob not to fear going down into Egypt, assuring him that He would there make of him a great nation. This promise placed Jacob's descent into Egypt within God's sovereign plan, where his family would multiply during the 215 years before the Exodus.

Les explains that under the circumstances, and in God's sovereign plan to bring all this to pass, God finally tells Jacob in no uncertain terms to go down into Egypt. In Genesis 46:3, God says, "I am God, the God of thy father, fear not to go down into Egypt, for I will there in Egypt make of thee a great nation." Les emphasizes that this would happen down in Egypt over the next 215 years, which are part of the 430 years God told Abraham would transpire from the time He first called Abraham. The family settles in Goshen, and those twelve sons become the setting for the population explosion that leads into the book of Exodus.

Genesis 46:3
