What did God promise Jacob when he went down into Egypt?

According to Genesis, God promised Jacob that in Egypt He would make of Jacob and his twelve sons a nation of people. From those twelve sons came the Jewish nation. This promise was fulfilled as Israel multiplied in Egypt before Moses led them out.

Les explains that when Jacob went down into Egypt, God promised him that there in Egypt He would make of Jacob and his twelve sons a nation of people. That is where the Jewish nation originated, out of those twelve sons. Les also notes that about 500 years later, God called Moses to lead this multiplied people out of Egypt, and the whole purpose was to prepare them for the coming of the Messiah.
