What did God promise Jacob when he went down to Egypt?

According to Genesis, when Jacob went down into Egypt, God promised that He would make of Jacob and his twelve sons a nation of people. That promise meant the Jewish nation would come from those twelve sons while they were in Egypt.

Les teaches that Genesis records this promise: when Jacob went down into Egypt, God promised him that there He would make of Jacob and those 12 sons a nation of people. Les says that is where the Jewish nation came from, out of those 12 sons. He also ties this to Israel’s later multiplication in Egypt and God’s call of Moses about 500 years later to lead the people out, bring them to Himself, and prepare them for the coming of the Messiah.
