Why did the rulers and princes of the world crucify Jesus, the Lord of glory?

Paul writes that none of the princes or rulers of this world knew the hidden wisdom of God. Had they known who Jesus truly was—the Lord of glory, the promised Messiah and Creator—they would not have crucified Him. Their ignorance, not understanding His identity, explains why the crucifixion happened.

Les teaches that the rulers and princes of this world—both Roman and Jewish—crucified Jesus because they did not know who He was. He points to 1 Corinthians 2:7-8, where Paul writes of the hidden wisdom of God ordained before the world. None of the princes of this world knew it, for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Les explains that had the Romans truly known Christ’s identity, they would never have put Him on the cross, and had the high priests of Israel known He was the very Creator, God of the universe, they would not have allowed it. So the crucifixion happened because they were ignorant of His true identity. Les also parallels this with Joseph, whose brothers did not recognize him when they came for grain, even though he gave them hints and they depended on the grain he had stored. Likewise, the nation as a whole never understood Jesus was the promised Messiah, though a few did.
