Why did the princes of this world crucify the Lord of glory according to 1 Corinthians 2:8?

According to 1 Corinthians 2:8, the princes of this world crucified the Lord of glory because they did not know—they were ignorant of God's hidden wisdom and mystery. Paul writes that had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Les explains that 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 speaks of God's wisdom in a mystery, a secret that has been revealed, which none of the princes of this world knew. Because they were ignorant, they crucified the Lord of glory; had they known it, they would not have done so. This same truth applies not only to Israel but even to Rome, the Gentiles. Earlier, Christ pleaded from the cross, "Father, forgive them," because "they know not what they do," and Peter likewise said they killed Him but were ignorant. Les calls this God's loophole for the nation of Israel: had they known who they were killing, God would have had to destroy them.
