How can Jacob say he saw God face to face when the Bible says no one can see God?

Jacob could say he saw God face to face because he encountered God the Son in a visible theophany, not the invisible triune Godhead. Scripture affirms no one has seen the Trinity and lived, yet God the Son appeared throughout the Old Testament, as when Abraham ate with Him.

Les explains that the apparent difficulty is resolved by distinguishing the invisible triune Godhead from God the Son. No one has ever seen the Trinity, the triune spirit part of God, and lived, but God the Son was visibly seen throughout the Old Testament in theophanies. Thus Jacob could say he saw God face to face because he encountered God the Son, who also blessed him there—something only God can do. Les also notes that Jacob, the old supplanter and deceiver, is being changed; he will limp for the rest of his life, but he will never again be a deceiver, while Israel is the spiritual side whose name is changed. Abraham in chapter 18 ate with God the Son, and the burning bush also involved God the Son. So Jacob’s statement does not contradict the truth that no one has seen the invisible Godhead.
