Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is Laban described as the person who matched Jacob the deceiver?

Laban matched Jacob because they were two of a kind, constantly deceiving one another. Laban tricked Jacob on his wedding night by substituting Leah for Rachel, then justified it by the custom that the elder daughter must marry first, and bargained for seven more years of service.

Les explains that Jacob the deceiver meets his match with his uncle Laban. They are two of a kind, constantly hoodwinking one another. Laban pulls one on Jacob before he even gets started: after Jacob has love at first sight with Rachel, Laban brings Leah in as the bride on the wedding night instead of Rachel. Laban then offers a logical excuse, saying it is not right according to the custom of their country for the younger daughter to have a husband until the eldest is married. So Laban makes a deal with Jacob that if he serves another seven years beyond the first seven, then he could have Rachel. Les also notes that Jacob did not wait to the end of the fourteen years to have Rachel.
