Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is Les not in favor of emotionalism?

Emotionalism is not favored because emotion can push people into actions or decisions they do not truly mean. Esau wept and sought blessing with tears, yet his faith status did not change. Genuine conversion is not forced; God opens hearts, and that work may take time.

Les explains that emotionalism is suspect because people can be forced by emotion to do things they do not really mean. He points to Esau, who lifted up his voice and wept, and whose tears are what Hebrews means by seeking the blessing with tears. Yet despite all the weeping, wailing, crying, and tear-shedding, Esau's status in faith did not change one bit. He did not come out of the experience saying he would now believe what God says or become a man of faith. Les notes the same can happen with people today who go through an emotional upheaval. His favorite cliché is that anyone convinced against their will is unconvinced still. He gives the example of people brought into a home to watch a tape, after which someone immediately tried to force them onto their knees to ask the Lord to come in. Les says that does not work and is not the way God does things. God opens hearts, and it may take time.
