What is the only way to please God?
Scripture teaches that the only way to please God is by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please Him. Whether under the Old Testament economy or in the age of grace, a person pleases God by believing His Word. Good works or merely doing good cannot be a doctrine built from an isolated verse.
Les explains that Peter's warning that no Scripture is of private interpretation means you cannot take one verse and build doctrine on it. Cults do this by pulling verses from here and there. If verse 29 were lifted out alone, it could seem to teach that people go to heaven by doing good and to condemnation by doing evil. But studying all Scripture shows there is only one way to please God: by faith. Hebrews says without faith it is impossible to please God. Jesus was alluding to those who have done good as people of faith, whether under the Old Testament economy or in the age of grace. The only way to please God is by believing His Word.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
