In Acts 8:35, did Philip preach Jesus or Christ crucified to the Ethiopian eunuch?
Acts 8:35 records that Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with that same Scripture, preached unto the eunuch Jesus. The text does not say he preached Christ crucified; that wording belongs to Paul’s later revelation. Philip’s message matched the earlier understanding that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God.
Les explains that many assume Philip preached Christ crucified in Acts 8:35, but the text actually says Philip began at the same Scripture and preached unto him Jesus. He does not preach Christ crucified; that message comes later in Paul’s writings, where Paul says, “But we preach Christ crucified.” At this point the hand cannot do that yet, because it had not been revealed as gospel. Philip was in perfect accord with what Peter understood, that Jesus was the Christ. The eunuch’s confession was simply that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
