Would the Corinthians have been terrified if Jesus returned right after Paul wrote to them?

No. Paul says that even though the Corinthians had failures and weaknesses, if the Lord had returned a day or two after they received his letter, they would stand before Him blameless, not shaking in their boots. God could do this on the basis of grace, not their own blamelessness.

Les teaches that the Corinthians were believers with real failures and weaknesses. Yet Paul told them Christ would confirm them unto the end so they would be blameless. If the Lord had come within a day or two after they received this letter, they would not have stood before God shaking in their boots. Paul says they would stand before Him blameless, even though they were not blameless in themselves. The basis for that standing is grace, not their performance. Les also recounts a caller from Oklahoma who was upset that he was alluding to eternal security for the true believer, asking, "How can you do that?"

1 Corinthians 1:8

Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
