Where did Abraham and Terah travel after leaving Ur?
After leaving Ur, Abraham and his father Terah traveled up along the Euphrates River into the area known as Syria. The place they reached was later called Haran. After Terah died, Abraham continued from Haran down into the land of Canaan.
Les explains that Abram and his father Terah made their way up along the Euphrates River from Ur, which was way down on the Gulf, and came into the area presently known as Syria, with Damascus somewhere around. The name of the place later becomes Haran. Then from Haran, after Terah dies, Abraham came down into the land of Canaan, wherein the Canaanites dwelt. Les adds this background helps picture the setting, tying it to the three sons of Noah and the Middle East being front-page news.
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
