Les Feldick Bible Study

Why does Les say the angel of the Lord is God the Son?

Scripture later speaks of the angel of the Lord as the one who redeemeth me. Since there is only one Redeemer in Scripture, that Redeemer is Jehovah in the Old Testament and Christ in the New, so the angel of the Lord or angel of God is God the Son.

Les explains that whenever the phrase “the angel of the Lord” appears, it refers to Jehovah. His reason is that a later passage, which he places back in chapter 46, calls this figure “the angel of the Lord who redeemeth me.” Because Scripture has only one Redeemer, and that Redeemer is God the Son—Jehovah in the Old Testament and Christ in the New—the angel of the Lord, or the angel of God, must be God the Son. He urges listeners never to lose sight of that, since it will come up every once in a while.

Genesis 16:7

And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
