Why does the redeeming angel in Genesis 46 show the angel of the Lord is God the Son?

The title “redeeming angel” identifies the angel of the Lord as God the Son because Scripture has only one Redeemer. In the Old Testament that Redeemer is Jehovah; in the New Testament He is Christ, the same person, so the angel of the Lord is God the Son.

Les explains that the angel of God, or the angel of the Lord, is always God the Son—Jehovah. He points back to Genesis 46, where Jacob referred to Him as the redeeming angel. Since there is only one Redeemer in Scripture, and that is God the Son, this title confirms the angel’s identity. The same Redeemer is Jehovah in the Old Testament and Christ in the New. So in Exodus 23, when Jehovah says He sends an angel before Israel to keep them and bring them into the prepared place, the angel is the same person, God the Son.
