How is the righteousness of God obtained?

The righteousness of God is obtained not by keeping the law, not by religious effort, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. It is manifested apart from the law, witnessed by the law and prophets, and applied to all who believe the gospel—that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.

Les explains that since believers are no longer under the law, under the old Mosaic system, the righteousness of God is now manifested without the law—put in the spotlight—yet it is witnessed by the law and the prophets. It is not obtained by law-keeping or by being religious. Instead, it comes by the faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all who believe. There is no difference, because all have sinned: the law-keeping Jew was a sinner, and the unlaw-keeping Gentile were sinners. So it is only by faith in the gospel—believing that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead—that one receives this righteousness. Grace does not give license to sin, but it also does not place us back under the law's demands.
