How does God's righteousness come to us?

God's righteousness comes not from our own righteousness, which is as filthy rags, but by the faith or faithfulness of Jesus Christ. It is given unto all and upon all who believe, by a work of God, covering the believer so that God sees Christ rather than the sinner.

Les explains that this righteousness is not our own; ours is nothing but filthy rags. It is God's righteousness, which is by the faith or faithfulness of Jesus Christ, and it comes unto all and upon all that believe. He illustrates “upon” as being draped with a blanket or cloak that totally covers a person. When God looks at the believer, He sees that outer covering, and that covering is Christ. This is what it means to put on Christ: whatever God sees is not me or you, but Christ. Les emphasizes that this happens by a work of God, not by human effort. A person cannot crucify themselves; likewise, in salvation I cannot do anything—God has to do it, because it is done in the invisible realm, in the Spirit. According to Romans, having put on Christ becomes His righteousness.
