Who were the prophets and the Psalms written for?
The prophets and Psalms were predominantly written for the benefit of the nation of Israel. Romans 3:1-2 asks what advantage the Jew had, answering chiefly that unto them were committed the Word of God. Israel held a preeminent, privileged position because God entrusted His Word to them.
Les explains that from the call of Abraham especially, everything concerned the nation of Israel. He says the prophets, the Psalms, and everything were predominantly written for the benefit of the nation of Israel. To support this, he directs attention to Romans 3:1-2, where the text asks what advantage the Jew had and what profit there was in circumcision. Les notes Israel was in a preeminent position, feasting at Jehovah's table and dwelling on the root and fatness of Abraham. Israel had many privileges: the temple, the Shekinah glory, God's miracle-working power, and the priesthood. But the preeminent privilege was that unto them were committed the Word of God, which put Israel in an enviable position.
